Skincare Myths—Busted! What You Really Need to Know
Let’s face it: skincare advice is everywhere. From influencers and YouTube tutorials to that one friend who swears coconut oil fixes everything—it can be hard to know what’s fact and what’s fluff. As someone who’s been in the beauty and skincare world for years, I’ve seen the effects of misinformation up close, and let me tell you, your skin deserves better!
Here are some of the most common myths I hear at Helton House Aesthetics—and the truth that your skin has been waiting for.
❌ Myth 1: “If it burns, it’s working.”
✅ Truth: If your skincare product is making your skin burn, it’s more likely damaging your moisture barrier than doing anything beneficial. A little tingle from an active ingredient is one thing, but burning, stinging, or intense redness is a red flag—not a result. Skincare shouldn't hurt!
❌ Myth 2: “You don’t need sunscreen if it’s cloudy.”
✅ Truth: UV rays are sneaky! Up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds. Wearing sunscreen every day (yes, even when it’s overcast or wintery) is one of the best anti-aging and protective habits you can build into your routine.
❌ Myth 3: “Oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer.”
✅ Truth: Skipping moisturizer can actually increase oil production. When your skin is dehydrated, it compensates by producing more oil, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. The key is finding a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that nourishes without overwhelming.
❌ Myth 4: “Natural ingredients are always better.”
there are a lot of things that you can use that are all natural on your skin, but very often certain skin issues require help that can’t be found in nature
✅ Truth: We love clean and plant-based ingredients, but “natural” doesn’t always mean safer—or effective. Poison ivy is natural, but I wouldn’t want it anywhere near my face! What matters more is whether an ingredient is tested, safe, and appropriate for your skin type and concerns.
❌ Myth 5: “You can shrink your pores.”
✅ Truth: Sorry, but pore size is largely genetic. While you can minimize the appearance of pores by keeping them clean and using treatments like facials, chemical exfoliation, or microneedling, you can’t physically shrink them.
So, what should you do instead?
The best way to take care of your skin is to listen to it—and when in doubt, talk to a professional. I offer free 30-minute consultations at Helton House Aesthetics because your skincare should be as personal as your fingerprint. No one-size-fits-all product or TikTok trend can replace real guidance, and that’s what I’m here for.
Let’s leave the myths behind and start giving your skin the smart, personalized care it deserves. 💛
